Charles Dickens understood this paradox in A Christmas Carol. Remember the scene where Scrooge is confronted by the ghost of his former partner, Jacob Marley, dragging a heavy chain forged from “cash-boxes, keys, padlocks, ledgers, deeds, and heavy purses wrought in steel”?
Marley and his unwieldy chain are a warning to Scrooge to take an interest in his fellow man—to lighten his spiritual load—before it’s too late. But Scrooge, unmoved, replies:
“It’s enough for a man to understand his own business, and not to interfere with other people’s.”
To which the Ghost cries out:
“Business? Mankind was my business.”
Chilling, isn’t it? Every year, it makes me wonder how long my own “spiritual chain” might be.
I get it. Life is busy. It’s easy to get caught up in what Dickens would call the “dealings of your trade” and forget the “comprehensive ocean” of the business of being human. But as the season of giving approaches, it’s a chance to focus on what connects us—and on the real, human “business” we’re here to do.
